Ben Hicks

Professor in Mechanical Engineering University of Bristol


Ben is a Chartered Engineer with 25 years’ experience in academia and industry. He has worked as consultant in a variety of sectors including high value manufacturing, FMCG, software and construction. He was a founding member and later director of the University of Bath’s Innovative Design and Manufacturing Research Centre before moving to Bristol in 2012.

Ben has published over 200 articles in the areas of design management, design tools, manufacturing technologies and manufacturing systems. Recent work includes tools and technologies for: health monitoring of mega projects; twinning during product development; automatic generation and refactoring of CAD models from 2D drawings; hybrid prototyping techniques; and, light-weight solutions for BIM and asset maintenance.

As well as being a Professor of Mechanical Engineering Ben holds a number of non-executive and advisory roles, and supports a number of technology start-ups.
