Dr. Bob Emiliani

Professor of Lean Management in the School of Engineering and Technology at Connecticut State University in New Britain, Connecticut.


Dr. Emiliani has been a practitioner and teacher of Lean management for 25 years. Prior joining academia, he worked in industry for 15 years and had management responsibility in engineering (new product development) and operations (manufacturing and supply chain).

He was responsible for implementing Lean principles and practices in both manufacturing and supply chains at Pratt & Whitney. Dr. Emiliani was the first academic to establish a research agenda focused on Lean leadership, which has resulted numerous publications and leadership development workshops. Dr. Emiliani is a prolific, versatile, and award-winning writer whose publications span engineering, business, social sciences, and humanities.

He has authored 19 books and 49 academic research papers in six different disciplines: leadership, management, management history, supply chain management, higher education, and materials science and engineering.

His work on Lean leadership and Lean as applied to higher education is widely recognised. He has also created an innovative, process-based understanding of leadership called “Speed Leadership.” His recent work is focused on understanding, across multiple dimensions and in minute detail, factors that inhibit the advancement of Lean management.
